Everything You Need to Know About Immune System Boosters

May 1, 2020

As the weather changes, so can our eating habits. It’s easy to forget to eat the things which are good for us, and replace them with something more convenient like an ice cream. Now we all love a bit of ice cream here at The Protein Ball Co, but we also love our health and nutrition!

With the current changes taking place, we wanted to find out more about our immune system, how nutrition can boost our natural defence systems, and how we can stay in optimal health.

We spoke to Ceonia Graham, RD, to explore all of these benefits and much more.

What are immune system boosters and why are they important?

Fundamentally, the term “immune system boosters” comes down to our lifestyle and lifestyle choices. Things like getting a good amount of sleep (which naturally helps the body to repair), exercise + laughter (which are good sources of stress relief and endorphins), and what you eat (foods high in vitamins and nutrients), all play a part in boosting our immune system.

Vitamins A, B6, C, D + E, along with Selenium, Folic Acid, Iron and Zinc are the top vitamins and minerals to include in a balanced diet.

When these things are implemented into our daily lives, they help to prevent infection and disease including toxins, bad bacteria and viruses.

Are there any ingredients around the house that count as boosters?

Absolutely. For every vitamin and mineral, there are examples of common household foods which can probably be found in your cupboards or fridge! What you will find is that a lot of foods overlap and contain more than one.

Here are some examples:

Wholegrain cereals

Citrus fruits

We're proud to say our protein balls come in a variety of flavours, including some of the aforementioned ingredients! They’re all natural - and of course, ZERO nasties! Great if you’re looking for that extra boost, or if you’re simply after something quick and easy.

What are your personal favourites?

I’m a massive fruit lover! I tend to stick to a personal principle of fresh, frozen and tinned. If I can’t find the fresh version of a food, I’ll get the frozen version instead, and if that isn’t available, then I’ll go for the tins.

So fruits such as oranges, lemons, apples, mixed berries, pineapples + mangos can always be found in my house.

I’m also a big fan of the Cherry Bakewell Protein Balls! A perfect healthy snack and a great source of protein and some of the vitamins needed to boost the immune system. I love to use them as toppings for my breakfast.

If you’re looking to strengthen your immune system, why not give one of our snacks a try? Packed with protein, fruits + nuts, our protein balls will aid in that extra immune system boost, whilst doubling up as a great nutritious and delicious snack to enjoy - perfect for the spring!
