Here at The Protein Ball Co, we think it is important that we educate our customers on why they should be consuming protein snacks and how much protein they need on a day to day basis.
In one of our recent blog posts, we explained the benefits of protein - muscle restoration, contains essential amino acids, helps lower cholesterol and is full of vitamins + minerals. However, what is the main need for consuming protein?
Protein comes from the Greek word proteios, meaning "primary". This alone indicates the importance of protein in a healthy diet. Proteins are used to produce new tissues for growth and tissue repair and regulate and maintain body functions. Enzymes used for digestion, protection, and immunity are made of protein. Clever little things!
So how much protein do we need? The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for the average person is to consume around 0.8 grams of protein per kilo of bodyweight per day, or 0.36 grams per pound of bodyweight. To calculate your recommended daily protein intake, multiply your weight in pounds by 0.36. For example, a 160-pound person would need 160 x 0.36 = 58 grams of protein a day. Easy enough!
The RDA is 56 grams per day for the average inactive man and 46 grams per day for the average inactive woman. If you do any sort of exercise throughout the day, whether it’s walking, running, swimming or a gym workout, you will need to consume more protein than this.
The last thing our customers need to know is when they need to take protein. In short, everyone needs to consume protein regularly through the day. Your body needs a regular consumption of protein throughout the day to help optimize repair and growth, meaning your breakfast, lunch + dinner all need to contain a source of protein.
However, it is important to consume protein within an hour before or after exercise, so your muscles can replenish properly + become stronger. Your muscle needs amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and energy (carbohydrates) to do the job. That’s where we come in. We are perfect as an on-the-go snack before or after the gym when you need an extra protein boost. If you’re struggling to get the right amount of protein into your diet through your three meals a day then try our protein balls as a mid morning or mid afternoon snack. They taste like a sweet treat so you’ll never know you’re being good to your body! Shop the full range here.
